Warmer days are just around the corner and I am so excited about the prospect of no coats, fewer layers and all the outdoor adventures to come!
As a parent to a now 6 year old, and soon to be 3 year old, I find Spring and Summer SO much easier because they can just throw on a dress or a pair of shorts and a tee, and we are set for the day!
BUT I've also been a new parent to both a Spring and Summer baby and it can be so overwhelming knowing what to buy a newborn or young baby for hotter weather.
I thought I would share some tips from my own experiences and from my customers experiences too! It is so easy to get carried away and buy WAY too much, and often your baby will grow out of things before they've even had a chance to wear them.
The good news is you actually do not need a lot in terms of clothing for Summer! The baby only really needs a handful of good quality organic cotton basics.
There are so many beautiful 100% cotton baby essentials available, but organic is SO much better for babies, and here are just a few reasons why...
1. Organic cotton allows babies skin to BREATHE.
It's natural that anyone would sweat in hotter weather, but because babies have such delicate skin, sweating can often cause heat rash, skin irritations and exacerbate existing skin conditions. Organic cotton is produced naturally, is chemical-free and so is therefore hypoallergenic.
2. Organic Cotton is engineered to keep baby dry and provide ventilation, reducing the risk of overheating. This is something I spent too much time worrying about with both my kids!
3. Organic Cotton lasts longer and washes better, meaning you don't have to buy as many items.
They can also be handed down to future siblings or friends/family. Yay to being sustainable! It also means you can treat your baby to a few more special items. The pre-loved market is also growing hugely so you can sell on your items afterwards!
Both my kids suffered from heat rash and mild eczema in the Summer and swapping to organic cotton clothing/accessories helped massively. I also made sure that all lotions were completely natural and hypoallergenic, Weleda White Mallow being my personal favourite.
Honestly though, you really don't need much.
It really is about buying less and just buying well. If I could go back in time, this is exactly what I would buy, all in organic cotton of course!
2 x baby blankets
1 x organic cotton sun hat
4 x organic cotton dribble bibs
3 x organic cotton long sleeved bodysuits
3 x organic cotton long sleeved wrap-over bodysuits
4 x organic cotton sleeveless bodysuits (these will be your best friend when it is really warm)
4 x short sleeved bodysuits
2 x baby leggings
2 x bloomers (also the cutest thing on)
2 x full length rompers
5 x sleepsuits
1 x light weight cardigan or jumper
Socks (not many, those tiny toes need to breathe)
I hope some of you find this helpful!
I know I would have and it would have saved me a fortune.
So many baby checklists have too much on them and it really is just so wasteful!
Thanks for reading and just let me know if you need any help. Equally, if you feel I have missed something that was an essential to you, please do let me know and I'll make sure I add it to the list!
